22. A Seal Upon Your Heart

A Seal Upon Your Heart

Beneath the apple tree I roused your love,
there where your mother toiled to give you birth.
Love is the greatest gift from heav’n above,
the strongest force existing on the earth.
Oh, place me like a seal upon your heart
and wear me as an emblem on your arm
that I may never from you be apart
for when I’m near you I feel safe from harm.
Love is as strong as death and burns like fire,
its jealousy unyielding as the grave.
Great streams of water cannot quench desire,
no floods or torrents nor a tidal wave.
If one thought he could buy true love with gold
he would be scorned and scoffed at manifold.

A Classical Beauty, John William Godward, 1902
