24. My Own Vineyard

My Own Vineyard

King Solomon had vineyards plentiful
that yielded luscious grapes and heady wine.
These gardens were considered valuable
and many tenant farmers rented vines.
A thousand shekels was the price they paid,
but you can keep your thousand, O my king.
I have one vineyard that I’ll never trade,
my lovely bride to whom I’ll always cling.
As I walk through the garden with my friends
I hear upon the air her gentle voice
which like a cooling mist on me descends
creating in me reason to rejoice.”
Oh come, my lover, come my swift gazelle!
There is no one on earth your parallel.

Dolce Far Niente, John William Godward, 1904
